Biography
Sali Berish was born in Tropoje, Albania in 1944. Before entering politics he studied medicine in Tirana, he eventually became a doctor and a leading researcher in the field of cardiology. He had several of his studies published in prestigious medical journals and magazines. Sali Berisha was elected President of Albania in the first free election in Albanian history in 1992. During his tenure, he engaged intense reforms, notably the complete privatization of the economy, except for certain large businesses. Due to severe corruption and government inaction over ponzi schemes he lost the elections in 1997. He became Prime Minister in 2005, in 2007 he met with George W. Bush in Tirana, the first American President to ever visit Albania. In 2009 Berisha was re-elected as Prime Minister in a controversial election.
