President of Algeria June 7, 2011 | Posted by Owner | Filed under Algeria, State Leaders Abdelaziz Bouteflika Date of Birth: 2 March 1937 Birth Place: Oujda, Morocco Political Party: Front de Liberation Nationale Arrival in Power: 27 April 1999 Religion: Sufi Islam Profession: Politician Biography Abdelaziz Bouteflika was born in Morocco, he later moved to Algeria where he studied and then became involved with the Front de Liberation Nationale during the war of independence. Following the war he served several political posts and eventually left the country after falling out with the administration. In 1999 he was elected as president with 74% of the votes. Since coming into office he has instituted various economic reform programs, which have had major positive impacts on the economy, with a very high growth rate. These programs include large infrastructure spending, creation of jobs and privatization of state industries. He has also opened Algeria to the world, the former leaders had a rather isolationist diplomatic policy. Bouteflika was re-elected on April 9th 2009, with a 90,2% of the votes, without suggesting anomalies in the elections, these kind of results however make for very bitter losers.
