She studied at the University of Adelaide and at the University of Melbourne where she obtained a Bachelor of Laws. She became a lawyer in 1987 and by 1990 had become a partner at her law firm. She was elected to parliament for the first time in 1998 as a member of the Australian Labour Party. Following the 2001 election, she became the shadow minister for Population and Immigration, and in 2003 she became the shadow minister for health in 2003. She became deputy leader of the Australian Labor Party in 2006. Following the Labor Party victory in the 2007 Australian Federal Elections, Julia Gillard became Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, with the Prime Minister being Kevin Rudd. She also became the Minister for Education, the Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, and also the Minister for Social Inclusion. She became the Prime Minister of Australia on June 24th 2010, following Kevin Rudd's resignation as party leader due to a lack of support. She thus became Australia's first woman prime minister.
