Biography
Ilham Aliyev was born in 1961, in Baku, Azerbaijan. Aliyev attended Moscow State Institute of International Relations, eventually obtaining a doctorate in history. He held several posts relating to the oil industry in Azerbaijan. When his father Heydar Aliyev, stepped down from his role as President of Azerbaijan, Ilham was named his successor and he won the ensuing elections in 2003, with 76,84% of the votes. The elections were disputed but the results remained. In 2006 he made a visit to the United States.
