He studied law and became a lawyer in 1972. He entered the world of politics in 1975. He held several posts for the Progressive Liberal Party, before being expelled from the party and being elected as an independent candidate in 1987. In 1990 he joined the Free National Movement, and upon the death of its leader succeeded him as leader. In the 1992 election he led the party to a major victory and became prime minister. He decided to limit himself to 2 terms as prime minister and was replaced as leader for the 2002 election, however his party suffered a crushing defeat, and he returned as leader for the 2007 election, which he won.
