Hamad ibn Isa Al Khalifa was born in Riffa, Bahrain in 1948. He is the son of the former Emir Isa ibn Salman Al Khalifah. His education includes stays at military colleges in the United Kingdom and the United States. He succeeded his father in 1999, he implemented some major reforms including giving women the right to vote, releasing political prisoners and having elections for parliament. He is also opposed to the United States' invasion of Iraq.
