He is the current President of Cameroon. He attended the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris in 1961 and obtained a degree in International Relations. He entered politics at the end of the 1960's, where he held several high-level government posts. In 1975 he became the Prime Minister of Cameroon under Ahmadou Ahidjo. In 1982 he succeeded the President. He won elections in 1984 and then survived a coup attempt in April 1984. He won another election in 1988, 1992, 1997 and 2004, all of which were marred in controversy over their fairness and openness. In 2008 he eliminated term limits for the president and also gave himself immunity from prosecution once he was out of office. He is set for re-election in 2011.
