Joseph Kabila was born in Fizi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, in 1971. He is the current President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He joined his father's rebellion in 1996 and commanded an army of child soldiers. He attended a military academy in China and was subsequently named Major-General by his father in 1998 and named Deputy Chief of Staff of the Land Forces. He was later promoted to Chief of Staff of the Land Forces in 2000. In 2001 his father Laurent-Desire Kabila was assassinated and Joseph succeeded him as president.
In 2003 he survived a coup attempt, the Democratic Republic of the Congo still has ongoing issues regarding rebel armies and factions, but the civil war as since ended. In 2006 a presidential election was held and Joseph Kabila won.
