Biography:


Jose Ramos-Horta was born in Dili, East Timor, in 1949. He is the current President of East Timor. He studied in the Netherlands and the United States. He began his political career has an advocate for the plight of the people of East Timor internationally, he was their representative to the United Nations and many countries. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996. Before becoming prime minister in 2006 he held several ministerial portfolios. He won the 2007 presidential elections and was named the President of East Timor shortly after. He survived an assassination attempt in 2008.

Biography:


Xanana Gusmao was born in Manatuto, East Timor, in 1946. He is the current Prime Minister of East Timor. He joined the Portuguese Army in 1968 for three years. He played a leading role in the resistance, when Portugal granted independence to East Timor and Indonesia invaded. He organized the resistance and was eventually so instrumental that Indonesia made it a top priority to capture him. The Indonesians eventually did capture him and sentenced him to 20 years in prison, but he continued to lead the East Timor resistance and became even more popular, gaining many international supporters. He was eventually released and served as part of the UN administered government of East Timor and was eventually elected the country's first president in 2002. He was elected prime minister in 2007. He also survived an assassination attempt in 2008, in which he and president Ramos-Horta were targeted.
