Rosa Bonheur was born in Bordeaux, France. She was born in a family of artists with her father and siblings all being artists. She was unconventional for her time, disregarding the conventions of the age for women. Despite her originality she, it was tolerated by men, once they knew who she was. Her art mostly concentrated on animals, she had several types of animals at her chateau, including lions.
