Étienne de Vignolles, better known as La Hire, was an important French general during the hundred years war. He joined Charles VII's forces in 1418, and fought in the Battle of Baugé. He was a supporter of Joan of Arc and fought with her in many battles notably the Battle of Patay. When Joan of Arc was captured he tried to save her with Xaintrailles, by besieging Compiègne where they taught she was being held, but after capturing the city they learned she had been transferred to Rouen. He won the Battle of Gerbevoy in 1435 and was named Captain General of Normandy, he died at Montauban in 1443.
