She is the current Prime Minister of Iceland. She began her career as a flight attendant, following this she became involved in trade unions. She was first elected to the Althing in 1979, following this she held several high profiles posts including Minister of Social Affairs and Social Security. She became prime minister in 2009 following the resignation of the previous government and her ability to form a new coalition.
