Mary McAleese was born in Belfast, United Kingdom, in 1951. She is the current President of Ireland. She obtained a degree in law. Before becoming president she was a University lecturer and a journalist. She ran in the 1997 presidential elections and won, and she was easily re-elected in 2004.
