He is the current Prime Minister of Israel. He studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He joined the Israel Defense Forces in 1967, serving as an officer in the Sayeret Matkal Special Forces unit. He saw service in the Yom Kippur War and the Sabena Flight 572 counter-terrorist mission. Following his military career he spent time in the private sector. After making some powerful contacts inside the Israeli administration, he held some diplomatic posts before being named the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations in 1984 a post he held until 1988. He then joined the Knesset as a member of the Likud party, and became prime minister from 1996 to 1999, afterwards he held the positions of Foreign Minister and Finance Minister when Ariel Sharon was prime minister.
