Biography
Traian Basescu was born in Murfatlar, Romania, in 1951. He is the current President of Romania. He studied at the Naval Institute of Constanta and became a Merchant Navy Officer. Before joining politics he had a long career in the Merchant Navy. In 2000 he was elected as the Mayor of Bucharest, he held this post until 2004. He ran in the 2004 Romanian Presidential elections and was successful, he was re-elected in 2009. He is however the first President of Romania to have been suspended from his post, however the impeachment charges against him were not upheld.
