He is the current President of Sudan. He studied at the Egyptian Military Academy and also the Sudan Military Academy. He joined the Sudanese Army in 1960. He served in the Yom Kippur War in 1973, on behalf of the Egyptian Army. He eventually rose to the rank of Brigadier General and led a military coup which saw him took power in 1989. He has been the President of Sudan ever since. During his time in power the Second Sudanese Civil War took place, as well as the crisis in Darfur. In 2008 the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant against al-Bashir, so he could stand trial for his involvement in the massacres that took place in his country under his rule.
